Acupuncture For Beginners
Have you heard of acupuncture? Or maybe you've been curious about how in the heck this ancient medicine works! Acupuncture has personally changed my life and I was so excited to speak with Jaime Irving with Madison Acupuncture + Bodywork.
Jaime started as a massage therapist and loved the work but kept becoming injured. She knew she had to get into something else. After years of trying a cornucopia of various fields that weren't clicking she met an acupuncturist. It was then Jaime knew acupuncture was her path; it was as if she entered into a whole new world.
Acupuncture began thousands of years ago when people thought when you were sick you were inhabited by a spirit or ghost. They would heat up stones and nick the skin to draw blood called blood letting. This blood letting was thought to help the spirit exit from the body. Over a course of hundreds of years and repeatedly doing this, they noticed patterns. Fast forward to today, acupuncture is a known and trusted scientific medicine!
Many are aware that we have acupuncture points on our body. For example, there are certain points to help alleviate headaches or nausea. The acupuncture Jaime works with is of a Western perspective. This means she works to treat her patients with the nervous system to help re-pattern the brain depending on what ailments or pain they are suffering from... and what, you may be thinking, does that mean?!
There are points in the body that will recirculate. This is due to the fascia systems, or as Jaime described it as "the Saran Wrap around your body." The fascia system is a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place. It truly connects everything in the body with sensitive nerve endings similar to a second skin.
Jaime's treatments release trigger points within the fascia to help release pain that may be happening in patients. What is interesting is that while you might have pain in your ankle, it is more than likely coming from a completely different part of the body. Understanding where these points are located (Meridian points) are crucial in the effectiveness to acupuncture.
This only scratches the surface of how incredibly intricate of a medicine acupuncture is. Whether you suffer from any pain or stress, acupuncture is a wonderful treatment that has been completely life changing in my life.
