Creating an Inspiring Gallery Wall
Gallery walls are a popular way to spruce up your space. What we love so much about them is that they truly are timeless and can evolve with your style. They are a great way to take up a large space in your home and you can really express your personality and style with gallery walls.
Expression is encouraged! The best gallery walls are the ones that offer a little peek into a person’s personality and life. Whether it’s your favorite photographs from your wedding, postcards from family vacations, or art prints that bring you joy; the options are endless.
When I started Grasshopper Goods, I have always had the mission to support artists and makers. The variety of prints we carry are special and all unique. We have always focused on supporting artists and makers to help bring their art to you.
Art holds a special place in my heart. My father was an artist, my brother is an artist, my daughter studied art, and the list goes on. Art is a personal expression. Whether you create art or simply appreciate art, organizing and building a gallery wall is a gorgeous way to share your favorite pieces of art; a salute to you.
Below are some tips and tricks on how to create a gallery wall that is true to your personal style.
Plan it out - This is probably the most important tip when it comes to gallery walls! Because there are almost always a variety of sizes, textures, and colors, you want to measure and plan out the space before you begin nailing holes in the wall. This way, you have the option to play around with different ways to organize the gallery. I like to take a photo of the wall, print it out, and then roughly draw out the shapes where you plan on organizing the gallery wall OR lay them out on the floor to be able to organize them based on size and color.
Play with themes - This is where the options are truly endless when it comes to gallery walls. Maybe you have a specific style in each of your rooms and want to focus on a theme. This is where your personal style can really shine. Maybe your theme is family in your living room and you include special photos and artwork from your family vacations, or maybe it’s simply a color that you want to focus on with a variety of unique prints.
Repurpose frames - Frames can get expensive. One of the best kept secrets (it may not be a secret anymore), is to THRIFT and repurpose. I recommend keeping some of the pieces you need frames for in your car and when you pass a thrift store, stop by, bring in the print, and see if you can find one to fit. Or, make a list of the sized frames you need in your phone. And don’t worry if you don’t love the color… stop by your local hardware store and grab a can of spray paint.
Experiment with shapes + sizes - No matter your style, creating an interesting gallery wall is an art form. You want your eyes to naturally follow across the gallery wall by spreading out the shapes and sizes. This way it grabs attention to the wall and naturally has people absorbing all the wall has to offer.
Utilize a variety of artwork - This is the most fun part. Finding the pieces you want to use on your gallery wall! The limit does not exist and there are no restrictions. Don’t be afraid to add pieces that you wouldn’t expect on a wall. Maybe a shelf to add some 3D pieces and plants, or any other sentimental pieces you love. Adding kids artwork is also fun to frame and add to your wall. Like I said, there are no limits to what you can add.
